Western Sydney Airport creating more jobs for locals

04 December 2019

Western Sydney Airport is putting the call out for workers to apply for jobs on one of Australia’s most significant projects as it prepares to ramp up construction.

Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Graham Millett said work on site would expand quickly in the new year as initial earthworks are completed to make way for major earthworks which involves moving around 25 million cubic metres of earth.

“We are commencing recruitment for this exciting new phase of this once-in-a-generation project and we’ll be holding an employment forum to provide potential candidates with an overview of the work and the positions we are recruiting for,” Mr Millett said.

“Currently, we’re looking for operators of earthmoving equipment such as scrapers and tipper trucks, as well as service crews for the large fleet of earthmoving equipment we’ll be using to level the site.

“We’re also looking for people to service these machines at our on-site workshop – plant mechanics, auto-electricians, light vehicle mechanics, boiler makers, servicemen, refuelers and apprentice mechanics.

“Information sessions will be held on December 10 and we encourage anyone who fits that skill set to come along and hear about the project, meet the team and submit an application.

“For those with other skill sets, keep an eye on our website because we’ll be on the lookout for other roles in future.

“Western Sydney Airport has strong employment targets for local, Indigenous and learning workers and I’m pleased to say that as of June 30, local Western Sydney workers made up more than 50 per cent of our total workforce – almost double our construction phase target of 30 per cent.

“As someone who grew up in Western Sydney, I’m proud to be delivering an Airport that is already creating so many opportunities for locals and we’ll be working hard to ensure that continues.”

Two information sessions will be held on December 10 at 4pm and 5pm at the Western Sydney International Experience Centre, 100 Eaton Road, Luddenham.
