Community partnerships

We are invested in the communities surrounding Western Sydney International. and Western Sydney’s growth. This includes building, supporting, and connecting local communities through three key areas:

•        Empowering People: addressing social disadvantage, diversity and inclusion, and education.

•        Making Place: protecting, developing, or facilitating unique place-making projects and supporting sustainable growth across the region.

•        Awakening Opportunity: support for pioneering ideas and organisations in the areas of business and employment.

We do this through community partnerships, connecting our employees with our communities as volunteers supporting conservation or mentoring disadvantaged students and refugees from diverse communities.

Some of our current partnerships include:

Conservation Volunteers Australia

We partner with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to provide funding for environmental rehabilitation activities in Western Sydney.

Some of these have included working in the Penrith LGA where 47 volunteers including WSA employees rehabilitated the local environment as well as removing rubbish. These community engagement events also facilitated the formation of a new Bushcare group for the local area.

We also participated in the CVA’s World Environment Day Corporate Challenge providing ideas and solutions to reducing plastic waste in our waterways.

In 2020, we partnered with CVA to support their Greener Cities campaign through funding for community activities to support habitat building for sugar gliders.

SSI

We support Settlement Services International’s employment and enterprise services programs.

This aligns with our vision of growing the social and economic prosperity of Western Sydney and its diverse communities.  Primarily, we support SSI’s work readiness mentoring programs through providing WSA employees as mentors to their clients which have resulted in new skills and confidence for mentees.

We’ve also hosted and promoted SSI’s social enterprise Humble Creatives that provides opportunities for job seekers to get valuable hands-on work experience in a commercial production and retail environment.

Add to this our support of SSI’s Ignite initiative. We support business creation for people from refugee backgrounds and those with a disability who are keen to establish a small business or expand an existing one.

ABCN

Our partnership with the Australian Business and Community Network began in 2019. Volunteer mentors from a number of local businesses including WSA, are supporting the development of students’ skills and mindsets, confidence and aspirations.

Our staff have volunteered their time to mentor 84 students at schools in Western Sydney, including Miller High School, Rooty Hill High School, Leumeah High School, Kingswood High School and Blacktown High School.

These mentoring experiences have resulted in many positive outcomes including 67% increase in students agreeing - ”I am aware of the skills that employers are looking for.” There has also been 50% increase in students agreeing -  “I am aware of a wide range of career options.”

South West Community Transport (SWCT)

South West Community Transport (SWCT) addresses the needs of people with transport disadvantage. Our partnership enables a better understanding of accessibility needs across the community and supports SWCT’s social outings program, helping their clients stay connected in the community.

When required we also procure vehicles for our airport tours from this socially conscious organisation.
