Sydney's new airport showcases safety innovation

21 April 2023

Emerging technologies with the potential to save lives on worksites have been seen in action at the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport Inaugural Safety Innovation Show.

Industry experts have come together for the first time in Western Sydney to see the latest innovations including drones which are used across the project to monitor airport construction, Artificial Intelligence used on vehicles to automatically stop heavy equipment if workers are too close and 'Robo Riggers', wireless load controlling systems for cranes that eliminate the need for taglines or people near loads, reducing cycle times and increasing efficiency.

WSI CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Simon Hickey said sharing ideas and examples of leading edge technology across the airport's worksites with other major Western Sydney projects was an invaluable exercise.

"Safety hazards are always present on construction sites, so continually looking at new and improved ways of controlling risk is always front of mind," Mr Hickey said.
"With every contract we sign, every employee we take responsibility for, every deadline we promise to meet - safety is our highest priority now and as we look towards being an operational airport,

"There are thousands of people working on construction sites to build a better future for Western Sydney and nothing is more important than ensuring they return to their families safe and well at the end of each day."

Exhibitors including SafeWork NSW, Sydney Metro, Endeavour Energy, Sydney Water and NBN Co joined safety regulators and airport building contractors CPB Acciona, AeroWest and Multiplex to demonstrate the latest in safety innovations.

"More than 7.3 million hours have been worked by people constructing Sydney's new airport with an encouraging safety record against the industry benchmark," Mr Hickey said.

"We will continue our vigilance through our peak construction phase and as we transition to operating as an international airport by enhancing our strong, grassroots safety culture with the latest technologies at every stage."

The Western Sydney International Airport Safety Innovation Show is a regular opportunity to share knowledge and learn about new directions in safety and a chance to highlight what organisations are doing across Western Sydney.
